JOHANNESBURG - An eyewitness to the murder of 32-year-old Ashwin Mouwers said she was deeply hurt as he was her only hope for justice.

Delmaine Steffensen witnessed Mouwers being shot and killed by two unknown gunmen outside the Lenasia Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Mouwers was the first witness who was meant to testify in the 2021 Eldorado Park murder case of Clejean Steffensen, Delmaine’s son.

Clejean died in hospital after allegedly being run over by a car driven by murder-accused Donell Cooper.

Delmaine explained what happened during the shooting.

"We were standing outside court, I was busy scratching inside my bag. When I looked up I saw Alan running and then I saw two guns on top of Ashwin’s head and then I froze. Everyone started running but I just stood. And then I just saw Ashwin falling and there was blood coming out of his head."

She said that Ashwin was a pillar of strength and her only hope of justice for her late son.

"Very sad because he was only trying to help me. He was the only one who would go to court with me every time, even if he didn’t have to go to court he was there. I am deeply hurt."
