JOHANNESBURG - The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says there are no signs of human life in False Bay, despite discovering seven vessel crew survival suits in the area.

According to the institute, the alarm was raised by a surf-ski paddler, who spotted the suits over the weekend.

The rescue institute said two survival suits were recovered between Sea Island and Roman Rock Lighthouse, while three others were found floating at Fish Hoek beach.

It said there were no signs of human life in that area, raising concerns that a vessel might be in trouble.

The NSRI's spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said two more suits were later found close to False Bay Surf Club and Sonwabe Beach.

"It is odd for this type of survival equipment to be found adrift or coming ashore and the mystery as to their origin deepens. NSRI, in cooperation with law enforcement and police, are continuing to monitor this matter but, at this stage, we remain cautiously optimistic that they are not related to any persons or any vessel in any distress or any kind of trouble."
