JOHANNESBURG - Mozambican president Daniel Chapo has called for peace and unity following months of widespread political unrest in the country.

More than 100 people have allegedly been killed in violent clashes with police and the military since civil unrest erupted across parts of Mozambique in October 2024.

On Thursday, Chapo addressed religious leaders and officials at an interfaith gathering at the Maputo Cultural Centre.

Chapo could be seen tightly clutching the hand of his wife during several prayers by religious leaders at the interfaith gathering.

He used the opportunity to call for peace following months of political unrest in the country.

“It is essential for all of us to work together to strengthen peace, consolidate national reconciliation, and, most importantly, instil in the hearts of each Mozambican the need for forgiveness and reconciliation. Strengthening our national unity is crucial, as it forms the foundation of our victories.”

It was Chapo’s first public appearance and address as president following his inauguration on Wednesday.
