MAPUTO - Calm has been restored in parts of Maputo following earlier clashes between protesters and police.

A handful of demonstrators gathered near Independence Square where president-elect, Daniel Chapo, was inaugurated.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was among the many international dignitaries who attended the event.

But many Mozambicans believe their future is a tale of two presidents.

Many Mozambicans believe the future of their country rests in the hands of two presidents - Chapo and Venancio Mondlane.

Mondlane, the official opposition leader to Chapo’s Frelimo party, is widely regarded as a president for the people, while a debate wages as to whether Chapo can compare.

Maputo resident, David Pinto, was one of the few who hasn’t chosen a side.

"I don’t want to talk about the situation between these two presidents Chapo and Venancio Mondlane, but we hope that they are going to find a solution because we have two presidents in the same nation, but we hope we are going to pass these challenges."

Chapo’s inauguration proceeded at Independence Square in the heart of the city earlier without any major disruptions.
