JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) said that the country would be in a worse state if the African National Congress (ANC) did not exist.

The SACP gave a message of support to its alliance partner as it celebrated 113 years of existence on Saturday.

The celebrations were held at the Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha.

SACP Deputy Chairperson Thulas Nxesi:

"On this joyous day, as we reflect on the years of the struggle, we can ask where would we be now without the ANC. I would also add, where would we be without the alliance?"

Nxesi, however, acknowledged that while the ANC has done well in ushering in a democratic government, more work still needs to be done.

Ramaphosa stressed the importance of the party’s alliance with the SACP.

That relationship has been strained since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), with the SACP disapproving of the ANC’s key coalition partner, the Democratic Alliance (DA).

It has since indicated it plans to go it alone at the next elections.

Addressing thousands of supports, Ramaphosa said the ANC’s alliances with the SACP, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and civic movements like the South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO) - are among the best examples in the world of a united front.

“The alliance has been pulled together in struggle by the sweat and the blood of our people. It is therefore important that this alliance, must remain united. Let us unite the alliance and not divide this revolutionary alliance.”
