Awaiting trial prisoner escapes after court appearance in Malamulele

JOHANNESBURG - Police in Limpopo are searching for a suspect awaiting trial who escaped from police custody after he appeared in the Malamulele Magistrates Court.
It is understood that the 24-year-old suspect Thembinkosi Mabunda, who was with four others awaiting trial, escaped when they were meant to get into the prisoner transport vehicle on Friday following their court appearance.
Mabunda is facing multiple charges including carjacking.
Police said that additional charges have now been added to his record, including escaping from lawful custody.
Limpopo police spokesperson Stephan Thakeng said, "Police have been ordered to utilise the available resources to search for the awaiting trial prisoner Thembinkosi Gift Mabunda from Hasani Mbalati Village who escaped from police custody after a court appearance at Malamulele."
