JOHANNESBURG - Tributes continue to pour in following the death of legendary kwaito artist, Doc Shebeleza.

The 51-year-old, whose real name was Victor Bagopane, died at his Fairlands home in Johannesburg on Thursday shortly after being discharged from hospital.

According to his management, the musician suffered a long illness and was due for another check-up next week.

Born in 1973, in the vibrant streets of Soweto, Doc Shebeleza was part of a cultural movement of township life during the apartheid regime.

The veteran artist was a household name in the popular music scene and kasi culture, particularly in the kwaito genre.

He began his career producing gospel music but later became popular for his groundbreaking hits that featured prominently in South African music culture.

His most notable hits include Ebumnandini and Gets Getsa.

His manager, Shakes Mavundla, said that the 90s hitmaker was not only a musician but a philanthropist who cared for the good of his community.

"He helped many people in the community. He built people houses and bought children school uniforms and he gave grandmothers food parcels."

Mavundla said in his last call with Doc Shebeleza, he implored him to ensure that his legacy lived on.
