CAPE TOWN - An education law specialist said that cleaning supplies on school stationery lists could be one of the many consequences of education sector budget cuts.

With the reopening of schools less than a week away, some parents are shocked by the never-ending stationery demands like branded pencils, reams of A4 printing paper, tissues and cleaning materials.

Frustrated parents have questioned the need for all these items.

But education law specialist, Sue Larkan, said that the inclusion of sanitation items had become common at schools.

"The reduction in funding to our schools, we are finding our quintile four and five schools, which are your wealthier schools, pushing all this responsibility back onto the parents. It's not legally binding. There's no way they can force a parent to buy these items."
