DURBAN - A 17-year-old mother from Umlazi has been arrested for the alleged murder of her one-year-old child.
The toddler was shot and killed on Monday in the J section area.
Initial reports suggested that the child was alone in the house while the mother was sweeping the yard when a gunshot went off.
However, on Wednesday morning, police took the mother into custody.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda: "At the time, the mother told police that she was outside the house in the yard when she heard the sound of a gunshot going off from inside the house where her son was, alone. She further claimed that when she went inside to investigate, she found her son lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head and that she saw no one leaving the house."
Netshiunda said the mother’s version of events didn’t add up.
"Police investigations have, however, found contrasting information. It is suspected that the mother was playing with a gun when a bullet accidentally went off and killed her son."
