JOHANNESBURG - Drug paraphernalia was found scattered in parts of former President Nelson Mandela's Houghton property where five people were arrested on Wednesday.

Three of the five suspects were arrested in connection with the hijacking of a vehicle belonging to an Uber driver on Tuesday.

Two others, a female, and one of the alleged grandsons of Mandela were also arrested.

A regular sightseeing stop-over for Joburg tourism buses, the property of the former statesman is situated in the plush and usually tranquil suburb of Houghton.

But things were different on Wednesday when police stormed the massive property situated on 12th Avenue and arrested Madiba’s grandson, his alleged female partner and three other men.

This after a vehicle, hijacked from an Uber driver in Norwood, was traced back to the property and recovered.

But that wasn’t all.

Police also found stolen goods, a firearm that fires blank rounds and dozens of drug paraphernalia.

Syringes were found scattered throughout the small cottage where the three suspects were arrested.

Sources claim several syringes were also found at a portion of the home where Mandela’s grandson and his partner were living.

The suspects will appear in court in due course.
