CAPE TOWN - More than 13,000 people have been arrested in different parts of the country in the first week of this year.
Some of the major arrests include the re-arrest of a Zimbabwean fugitive, Lovemore Musoyi.
The 32-year-old had been on the run for almost a year.
This after escaping police custody in Limpopo on New Year's Day in 2023, during a transfer to Witbank Correctional Services.
Musoya is facing more than ten criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, armed robberies, and kidnapping, among other charges.
National police spokesperson Vincent Mukhathi: "1,743 wanted suspects were arrested for various serious and violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, business and house robberies. 142 suspects were arrested for murder, majority of these suspects were arrested in Eastern Cape with 36."
