The Western Cape Education Department is set to cut 2,407 teaching posts on Tuesday due to a R3 billion budget cut from the national government.

Counsel for the department informed the court that the affected teachers were told in August last year that they would lose their jobs.

The department argued that the SAC, representing the teachers, had enough time to launch an application to halt the process.

Before making the ruling, Judge Melanie Holderness told the court the SAC created its own urgency for the matter to be heard, and failed to give reasons for delaying the application for five months.
