JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Acting Premier Lebogang Maile said that it was unacceptable for the country's women to feel unsafe, even in their own homes.

Maile was reacting to the murder of traffic warden Chesnay Keppler at the hands of her boyfriend and police officer, Mandla Buthelezi.

Buthelezi, who faces a murder charge, is reportedly known to have a history of violence and abuse.

He is currently under police surveillance in hospital after he shot himself while resisting arrest.

Maile, who visited the Keppler home in Eldorado Park on Saturday, has urged men, particularly male officers, to take the lead in advocating against gender-based violence.

"We always said that men must protect women. We always say that our men should be in the forefront against the fight of women abuse and there is this pandemic that is stubborn, which refuses to die and it requires all of us especially men to be in the forefront of confronting because it can't be right."
