CAPE TOWN - A Johannesburg police officer is expected to make his first appearance in the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with the murder of his girlfriend.

The officer allegedly shot and killed the woman with his service pistol on the Day of Goodwill.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said it's believed that he fired several shots at the 22-year-old through a window of her Eldorado Park home following a domestic dispute and fled the scene.

"As he was about to be arrested during the day, he allegedly shot at himself. He is in hospital under police guard," said the directorate's Lizzy Suping.

"IPID has reconstructed the crime scene, and the officer is facing a murder charge."

At the same time, on Christmas Eve, a Tshwane metro policewoman was shot and killed, allegedly by her partner, in her home at Loftus Gardens in Pretoria.

In the Western Cape, on 21 December, a Hawks officer allegedly shot and killed his wife in full view of their neighbours in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch.

He is also expected to appear in court on Monday.
