CAPE TOWN - It's been ten days since the New Brighton Beach in Nelson Mandela Bay was closed and it’s unclear when it will be reopened.
The beach was closed after high levels of E. coli were detected in the water.
The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Water and Sanitation spokesperson in Nelson Mandela Bay, Dries van der Westhuizen, said they had no choice but to close the beach.
"Contaminated water not only threatens the health of the people who rely on these beaches but also damages marine ecosystems. The fact that this has been allowed to occur highlights gross negligence in maintaining critical wastewater infrastructure. While we urge the public to stay informed and follow health advisories, it is unacceptable that they must shoulder the burden of government inaction."
