CAPE TOWN - A 63-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of the rape and attempted rape of his minor granddaughter.
The perpetrator, who cannot be named in order to protect the victim's identity, was sentenced in the Mitchells Plain Regional Court.
The court also ordered his name be placed in the National Register for Sex Offenders and recorded in the National Child Protection Register for persons unsuitable to work with children.
The court has heard the 63-year-old man was on parole for the rape of his own daughter when he committed the crimes against his minor granddaughter.
Despite overwhelming evidence, the accused maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
In her victim impact statement, the now 19-year-old victim said that what had taken place in May 2018 had left her scarred for life.
She described the incident as traumatic and shared that she still experienced flashbacks and nightmares.
Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Nicolette Bell, has welcomed the sentence and emphasised the National Prosecuting Authority's determination to fight the scourge of gender-based violence and the importance of continuing with the campaign of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children throughout the year.
