CAPE TOWN - Cellphone evidence related to one of two botched attacks on slain top cop Charl Kinnear's home took centre stage in the trial against alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack on Monday.

Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges linked to Kinnear’s murder in September 2020.

The State alleges that Modack and two other accused planned two warning attacks on Kinnear almost a year before his eventual murder in September 2020.

The State claims that Modack planned the attacks after Kinnear seized 80 guns from Modack's home and arrested his wife on a firearms charge in October 2019.

Modack allegedly used co-accused, Amaal Jantjies, to hire hitmen to scare Kinnear into returning the firearms and ceasing his investigation into the alleged gang boss.

Evidence presented in court on Monday showed that Jantjies plotted with hitmen to fire "warning shots" at Kinnear's home on the night of 18 November 2019.

A translated message from Jantjies to one of the hitmen reads: "I want to stand at my window and hear the gunshots being fired."

Messages showed that the hitmen decided against the attack because Kinnear's home was under police protection.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
