JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department has projected a budget shortfall of over R100 billion over the next three years.

It said that under the current financing model, many schools would struggle to deliver quality education for their pupils.

Recently, provincial education departments announced plans to cut down on contracted staff and freeze new appointments due to budget cuts.

In a media briefing earlier on Wednesday, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said the implications of these budget cuts threatened the future of many children.

"For the 2025/26 financial year, four provincial departments will battle to cover their budgets. For the 2026/27 year, five provinces will battle to cover their budgets. For 2027/28 seven provinces will be unable to afford their budgets. So, several provinces have preserved the same basket of posts for the past three academic years despite the fact learner numbers are increasing."
