CAPE TOWN - Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has praised the swift response of the police force following a cash-in-transit attack in the province this week.
Five suspected robbers were killed at their hideout in Keiskammahoek after a shootout with police on Monday.
Money, high-caliber rifles, and explosives were found at the scene.
The Hawks believe the group ambushed the cash van on its way to Stutterheim from East London and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Four other suspects linked to the attack were arrested and are expected to appear in court on Thursday.
"The Premier has stated that the safety and security of the province's residents and the protection of the economy are of paramount importance. It is in moments like these that the true mettle of our law enforcement is tested and proven," said Eastern Cape government spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie.
