JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng believes ActionSA was betrayed by the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s decision to abandon the Multi-party Charter (MPC) for the Government of National Unity (GNU).

ANC provincial spokesperson Lesego Makhubela said the perceived betrayal may have led Herman Mashaba's party to join forces with the ANC at the local government level.

Earlier this week, Mashaba announced intentions to work with the ANC to support the administration of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipalities.

Makhubela said the party was shocked to see ActionSA willing to come to the table, describing Mashaba’s change of heart as a turning point.

“We look at this behaviour as a Damascus moment – moving from being a Saul to being Paul - and that’s what it actually is because we’ve never thought we could have a conversation with Mashaba."

But he said the ANC is pleased to see ActionSA opening up to joining hands with other political parties other than the DA.

“At the heart of it, the electoral outcomes of the recent elections have communicated to all parties that we have to have a broader spectrum of all political parties sitting at one table.”

Makhubela said the ANC in Gauteng is consulting the party’s structures on some of the conditions ActionSA has put on the table.
