JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police are probing the cause of a blaze that claimed the life of one person at an old age home in Germiston.

A female resident at Die Ankers Tehuis on the corner of Bruce and Victoria Streets perished in the fire.

At least 50 residents had to be evacuated after the fire started at the double-storey building on Thursday morning.

While authorities probe the cause of a fire at an old age home in Germiston, on Gauteng’s East Rand, many of its displaced residents have been moved to places of safety.

ER24 branch manager for Gauteng South, Fahim Essop: "On arrival on scene, fireman managed to evacuate 50 of the elderly into a yard that was across the road."

Essop said four patients were transported to hospital while at least 30 residents were taken to Galway Primary School.

"Whoever is not injured, who needs additional help or support, who have been displaced, is on their way now to the school where we will open up the school hall and care for them at the moment."

The fire broke out shortly after 8 am on Thursday morning.
