President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the strengthening of witness protection protocols following an attempted hit on a man linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Speaking on the sidelines of an engagement with SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter, the President emphasised that witnesses in high-profile cases must be better secured and their identities shielded from public knowledge.
The President’s remarks follow a violent incident in Boksburg, where the vehicle of Wiandre Pretorius was targeted as he left his home. Police recovered at least 16 bullets from the scene.
Pretorius is currently under investigation in connection with the 2022 murder of Emmanuel Mbhense, a case currently appearing before the Madlanga Commission.
Gauteng police have confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened. Investigators are currently analysing CCTV footage from the area to identify the shooters.
"Witnesses in high-profile cases should not be identifiable and must be better secured," Ramaphosa stated.
Following the attack, Pretorius has been moved to an undisclosed safe location for his protection.
