JOHANNESBURG - The case against a man accused of being part of a kidnapping syndicate targeting Portuguese butchery owners has been postponed.

Bongani Dube appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning, facing charges of kidnapping, extortion, robbery with aggravating circumstances and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Dube briefly appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court where his case was postponed to August for further investigation.

He is alleged to be part of a kidnapping syndicate who have been targeting Portuguese butchery owners.

Last week, EWN broke the story, citing that since January last year about 20 Portuguese butchery owners and their staff had been kidnapped in Gauteng.

Police believe Dube is linked to at least four other kidnapping cases in which Portuguese butchery owners were targeted.

He was arrested in Hillbrow and led authorities to a home in Snake Park, Soweto, where a 49-year-old Portuguese businessman was found handcuffed.

Police continue their hunt for Dube’s accomplices.

He has abandoned his bail and will remain in police custody until his next appearance on 8 August.
