JOHANNESBURG - Eskom says it will implement load reduction in seven provinces to prevent infrastructure failure.

The utility said the rationing of power is informed by the risk of overloading transformers.

Load reduction has been touted as the work of municipalities and not Eskom, which supplies electricity to them.

On Monday, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said load reduction had nothing to do with Eskom’s inability to meet demand.

But in a statement on Tuesday morning, the utility said it had no option but to implement load reduction to protect its assets from repeated failures and explosions.

Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the North West are the provinces that will be affected.

Eskom said it would implement load reduction as a very last resort and for the shortest periods possible.
