Public order policing members deployed to KZN to also assist with Tongaat disaster - Masemola

JOHANNESBURG - National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said that the over 300 additional public order policing members deployed would also assist with ensuring the safety and security of the victims of the Tongaat disaster.
This following storms that battered Durban and surrounding areas on Monday, killing at least 11 people, including a 16-month-old child.
The extreme weather conditions flattened homes, flooded roads, and left thousands displaced.
The commissioner deployed additional boots on the ground on Tuesday as part of the third phase of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure's (NATJOINTS) plan to bolster policing operations in the post-elections phase.

"The province of KZN has been relatively stable thus far owing to the well-planned, coordinated, and executed ProvJoints operational plan. The first group of more than 200 members were deployed early in May, while the second contingency of over 300 were deployed during the elections period," said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe said that under the operational plan, law enforcement agencies would continue to monitor activities related to the outcome of the election results, along with any emerging incidents.
These members will also be deployed to the Tongaat area to assist with ensuring the safety and security of those who are affected by the disaster.
