DURBAN - It’s official - Former President Jacob Zuma’s new uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has secured 37 of the 80 seats in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature.
While there’s no outright majority in the province, the MK Party officially knocked the African National Congress (ANC) from its pole position and took the title of the biggest party in KZN.
The seat allocations were announced a short while ago.

MK took the lead in KZN very early on, and it hung onto it rather comfortably all the way through.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has come out with the second highest number of seats in the provincial legislature - 15 - and the ANC, the third, with 14.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) got 11; meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), 2; and the National Freedom Party (NFP), 1.
In the interim, we also know of course that the MK Party, despite its success in these elections, called for a recount, and wanted the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to hold off on declaring the elections until then.
So, what the response will be from the party and its members remains to be seen.
