On Saturday, SAHPRA recalled two batches of the paediatric syrup, citing possible toxic effects as vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty passing urine, headaches, and acute kidney injury which could result in death, among others.
Spokesperson Madimetja Mashishi said SAHPRA acted immediately after being alerted.
“SAHPRA immediately contacted the South African manufacturer, Kenvue, for a response. Following engagements with the manufacturer and in the best interest of the public, it was resolved that affected batches would immediately be recalled while an investigation is ongoing. Diethylene glycol is toxic to humans when consumed, and can prove fatal.”
SAHPRA said affected countries included South Africa, Eswatini, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria. The authority said it had also started alerting healthcare providers, and called on consumers of the products showing adverse side effects to visit a doctor.
