President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the government’s 30-year delay in improving the lives of victims of past injustices.

On Tuesday, Ramaphosa launched a housing project for victims of political violence in KwaZulu-Natal.

Most of the families who were affected by killings and burnings of their homes are from Ndwedwe, in the northern part of the province.

They were also recognised during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) hearings.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Ramaphosa said: “This reflects our commitment as a country and as a nation to recognise the healing of the divisions of our past and to honour all those who suffered justice and freedom in our land.”

Despite the slow pace, he said, they remain committed to resolving the backlog of families awaiting assistance.

“The passage of time has not diminished our commitment towards justice and reconciliation.”
