CAPE TOWN - Police in Mossel Bay, in the Western Cape, have opened an inquest docket after a man drowned at Dana Bay.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says its crew was alerted to the incident shortly after midday on Friday.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said it appeared that two men, both from the Strand in Cape Town, were fishing reportedly from a shallow sand bank.
"When the one man was swept away in rip currents, his friend had tried to save him. But also it appears he got into difficulty before being able to get to shore where he was assisted."
He explained what the crew found when they arrived at the beach.
"On arrival at the scene, one adult male had been assisted from the water. He was not injured and one man was missing."
Lambinon said a second man was spotted in the water and an NSRI swimmer and Fire and Rescue Services rescue swimmer recovered the man to the beach.
"On bringing him onto the beach, cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts were immediately commenced by paramedics and NSRI medics and they were also assisted by a Hartenbos lifesaving lifeguard who happened to be there."
However, Lambinon added, after extensive efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted, he was declared deceased.
