As inflation and living costs soar, young South Africans are actively pursuing innovative approaches to achieve financial independence while juggling existing financial commitments.

The allure of earning in a foreign currency has never been stronger, offering individuals the chance to maximise their earnings and enhance their overall quality of life.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) emerges as a promising avenue to earn dollars, won, or dirhams, all while immersing oneself in diverse cultures and experiencing iconic landmarks worldwide.

Experienced educators can expect to earn between R190 and R560 per hour, depending on their level of expertise and the prevailing exchange rate in the host country.

Furthermore, Dreyden highlights the potential tax advantages of earning in a foreign currency.

Depending on the duration spent outside South Africa during the tax year and the nature of employment overseas, teachers may qualify for tax exemptions, she explains.

With a flexible time frame of six months to complete the course, participants can work at their own pace, accessing materials online and occasionally attending face-to-face sessions.

Addressing concerns about language barriers in the classroom, Dreyden assures that teachers are encouraged to refrain from using the learners' native language, particularly since they may have multilingual classes.
