CAPE TOWN - The sentencing of a drug kingpin Fadwaan Murphy and his ex-wife, Shafieka Murphy, in the Western Cape has been hailed as a good move.

Fadwaan was sentenced to 18 years behind bars and was also fined R2 million for running a drug empire, while Shafieka was handed a 12-year sentence.

The kingpin is the first drug dealer in South Africa to be convicted under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Western Cape Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC Reagan Allen said the law took its course in the matter.

"We welcome this sentencing of this heartless criminal. He, along with those who are all part of his illicit drug trade, tormented our communities for decades. Of course, a longer sentence would have been ideal, however, we believe and trust in our justice system."
