Sundowns 1 victory away from claiming 7th consecutive DSTV Premiership title

JOHANNESBURG - Mamelodi Sundowns are just one win away from winning claiming a seventh consecutive DSTV Premiership title, and their game against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Thursday could see them achieving just this.

Sundowns remain unbeaten this season and wrapping up the league title with six matches left to play, would be made even more remarkable by the fact it will be their 11th fixture in all competitions over the last 32 days.

For their part, Chiefs will be hoping to spoil the victory party by being the first team to inflict to a league defeat on the Brazilians in two years.

Amakhosi will also have the added motivation of stopping Sundowns from celebrating a win on their home turf, in front of the Soweto giants’ fans, who’ve been waiting for nine seasons to see their club lift a trophy.

Chiefs are confident ahead of the clash with the log leaders. They broke their run of one win in eight games by beating Supersport United last weekend and interim coach Cavin Johnson thinks that result has re-ignited their stuttering season.

“We, as Kaizer Chiefs, feel that we are capable of playing a good game against them and capable of taking them pound for pound. It is our home game; we will have more supporters than Sundowns on Thursday night. And if the gods of football are our side, then we will be smiling after the game,” Johnson said.
