City Power exploring alternative ways to power parts of Joburg affected by outage

JOHANNESBURG - City Power says it's exploring alternative ways of providing electricity to areas affected by an outage.
Braamfontein, Parktown and Newtown were plunged into darkness on Wednesday after underground cables caught fire.

While the utility conducts assessments on site, it said power will likely not be restored until next week, adding that it was looking into possibly back-feeding power from other substations.
City Power said this could work as a temporary solution while repairs are underway.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said most of the work would not be completed on Thursday.
"We hope that we can inform the residents if we are able to do that so some of the customers are restored while we work on the repairs and restoration."
Mangena added that rubble still needed to be removed from the affected area using the required equipment.
