DURBAN - The police ministry said although it was still challenging, crime was decreasing at a satisfactory rate in Inanda, north of Durban.

The crime-riddled community, previously dubbed South Africa's rape capital, still battles with deadly shootings, gang violence and hijackings.

However, Minister of Police Bheki Cele said statistics were proving that police were fighting criminal elements in Inanda.

He spoke to journalists during a community imbizo in the area on Tuesday.

"Crime is still high here in Inanda but it has never been number five before in the country. We always knew if it is not one then it would be two - that tells the story that we are getting there, [and] we are moving forward."
