JOHANNESBURG - An independent law firm has been appointed to probe the deaths of two Gauteng pupils during a school trip, is expected to hone in on abuse allegations at the camp.

Siphamandla Peterson and Sibusiso Sibiya from the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni drowned while at a school camp in Centurion almost two weeks ago.

Their deaths sparked outrage about the regulation of school trips.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has since announced that Seanego Attorneys will probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The scope of the investigation will include a detailed timeline about the incident and probe whether checks and balances were in place to prevent the tragedy.

"Within their investigation they will also be interviewing learners who were in the camp and it’s quite a big cohort because there were 90 learners, so those who are willing to come forward and talk, we will be able to pick up all those details."

It has already emerged that the camp was not sanctioned by the education department and that there were no teachers or lifeguards during the trip.

A detailed report is expected to be handed over to the department on the 6th of May.
