JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says he will make good on plans to create 2 million new jobs for struggling South Africans as the official opposition party guns for high office.

He made the comments at the launch of the party's economic policy plan on Friday, as part of the build-up to the highly anticipated national elections.

Steenhuisen says the plan includes scrapping the R350 social relief of distress grant and replacing it with a job seekers' grant.

South Africa currently has an unemployment rate of 32.1% - among the highest in the world.

Steenhuisen says to address the joblessness crisis labour policies must be changed.

“It sets out how are going to improve the ease of doing business, which will unlock between 250,000 and 400,000 new jobs. Through making better fiscal choices, we will generate another 250,000 to 500,000 new jobs.”
