CAPE TOWN - Extortion is being blamed for the murders of two security guards in Philippi.

They were ambushed by four men and shot dead while escorting City of Cape Town staff to repair a sewer pipe in Phola Park on Tuesday.

The metro says tactical response and security escorts are being provided to staff and contractors in crime hotspots but despite this, services are being severely impacted by criminal attacks.

"There's not a day that goes by that the staff that work in our volatile areas aren't targets. There's been an increasing number of attacks on our staff while they're on duty, working to maintain a dignified service, especially in our informal settlements," said Water and Sanitation MMC Zahid Bad-Roodien.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced a R100,000 reward for information that helps prosecute the killers.
