Referendum Party says only goal to force a referendum on Cape independence

CAPE TOWN - A self-proclaimed, single-issue party, the Referendum Party, which will be challenging elections in the Western Cape for the first time next month, says its only goal is to force a referendum on Cape independence. 
 
With the Cape Independence Party out of contention for not meeting the requirements to file their registration documents, the Referendum Party is now championing the cause. 
 
However, while it currently backs the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s governance of the Western Cape, it's also hoping to poach 100,000 of its voters to support it in these elections.
 
The Referendum Party believes for the province to thrive, it must unshackle itself from the corruption prevalent in national government. 
 
The party's convenor, Mark Isaacs, says while the African National Congress (ANC) has proven itself to be a corrupt party, the DA is not serving all communities equally. 
 
"If you would say we are disgruntled, yes we are because the government is not giving us what we are supposed to have, and that’s why we are asking for a referendum where people can decide." 
 
Isaacs says if the party is represented in Parliament, it will insist that major decisions are decided by a referendum and not by politicians. 
 
"We basically want to be a watchdog when it comes to whoever rules in our country and in our province." 
 
Isaacs says it's a misconception that the push for independence of the province is only supported by white people. 
 
He estimates around 30% of the party's supporters are coloured voters.
