JOHANNESBURG - The government in KwaZulu-Natal says its activated disaster relief resources after heavy downpours that killed five people in Margate.
Three of the victims drowned when a vehicle they were travelling in was washed away by floods.
One person was struck by lightning and the fifth victim fell from a roof while trying to stop the water that was gushing into his home.
The Cooperative Governance Department MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi said that roads and other infrastructure were also damaged.
"The fact that such huge trees are down means that it was very, very powerful water that was coming through."
