SANRAL CEO says preserving jobs is a priority following scrapping of e-tolls

JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has promised that there will be no job losses for employees who work under the e-tolling system.
E-tolls are now a thing of the past after they were officially scrapped at midnight on Thursday.
About 906 people worked as direct employees for the e-tolls project since its inception in 2013. This includes employees at the central operations centre, call centre, satellite facilities along the road and point of presence at malls.
SANRAL CEO Reginald Demana said there are opportunities they are exploring to preserve the employees' jobs.
“The priority is to preserve jobs as the Minister [of Transport Sindisiwe Chakunga] has said. We are also talking to Gauteng. They want to use the satellite centres, the mall offices for purposes of other revenue generation and service delivery. We intend really to keep jobs.”
