CAPE TOWN - South Africa's global musical maestro Abdullah Ibrahim who was born and raised in District Six has given some insight into what inspires him to keep making music.

Ibrahim is back in Cape Town on Friday night for a performance at the City Hall on the same stage where he made his musical debut at 16 - more than 70 years ago.

The 89-year-old belongs to the golden generation of iconic musical giants who brought global artistic acclaim to South Africa.

Speaking to Cape Talk's Lester Kiewiet on Friday, he mentioned the "keepers" of his music.

"Who are the keepers? The keepers are the grandmothers - the keepers are the grandmothers - the grandmothers are the ones who kept all of this together. They were incredible people. So this is a dedication, a dedication to the women."
