CAPE TOWN - A family member of an alleged rape victim says they're relieved that the trial of a prominent Cape Town musician is finally underway at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court.

The 50-year-old man is accused of abusing his former student when he was 14 years old in 2013.

The alleged assault is said to have continued until the victim was 20 years old.

The man was arrested at his home in Kuils River in 2020 and is currently out on bail.

The victim testified in camera on Thursday and the case has been postponed to July 4.

The man has pleaded not guilty to all eight rape-related charges against him.

The victim's family spokesperson June Major:

"It is just sad and an injustice to the victim or any victim for a case to drag on so long before it actually came to a point of pleading. But as the saying goes, justice delayed is justice denied."

Major added that they're hoping for a fair and speedy trial.

"Because when you delay things like this, when there are so many postponements, it has an effect on the victim. We don't seem to realise the huge impact and effect that it has on the victim."
