JOHANNESBURG - At least two major partners in the Multi-Party Charter (MPC) have described Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen's condemnation of parties vying for power in the Western Cape as disingenuous and a demonstration of insecurity.

ActionSA and the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) said that Steenhuisen's remarks were at odds with the DA's own belief in a competitive, free market system.

Steenhuisen, speaking at the launch of the provincial manifesto at the Huguenot Hall in Paarl on Saturday, warned supporters against a doomsday coalition.

He also labelled parties such as Good, Rise Mzansi, the National Coloured Congress and the Patriotic Alliance as mercenaries.

What many on social media have simply labelled as a meltdown, the DA's MPC partners say goes against the spirit of a multi-party democracy.

Even though the FF+, which just fielded Corne Mulder to contest as Western Cape premier, was not subjected to Steenhuisen's rant, the party’s Wouter Wessels had thoughts about the weekend remarks.

"As to think that there should be no other political participation and representation in the Western Cape is quite arrogant and unacceptable."

Meanwhile, ActionSA's Micheal Beaumount said that Steenhuisen's broadside merely showcased his insecurities.

"About the DA's own claims of good governance in the Western Cape being universally experienced by all of its residents, ActionSA is growing prodigiously in the Western Cape because people know that ActionSA is needed."

Steenhuisen also warned supporters that those vying to remove the DA in the Western Cape wanted to loot the province.
