DURBAN - Residents in Mariannhill say they hope crime will be eliminated in the community now that alleged criminals have been killed in the area.

Nine suspects died during a shootout with police in the Disai township in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Community members allege that the gang has been committing many offences, including house break-ins.

With such a deadly shooting, one would expect community members to be shocked and scared.

But, this is not the case, as Mariannhill residents say this is a breakthrough for them.

Although they refused to be filmed or recorded, some community members living near the crime scene said they were happy that finally they would be free from the group’s alleged terror.

They said that when the shootout happened, they went into hiding thinking it was the group attacking residents.

The scene continues to be active, with all the nine bodies yet to be removed.
