JOHANNESBURG - South Africa has claimed yet another victory at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with the court agreeing to strengthen measures put in place to prevent genocidal acts in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The ICJ made this decision on Thursday, following an urgent application from South Africa.

In its ruling, the ICJ agreed with South Africa that since its initial ruling in January, the situation in Gaza had deteriorated significantly.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had become far more grave.

"The fact that Palestinian deaths are not solely caused by bombardment and ground attacks, but also by disease and starvation, indicates a need to protect the group's right to exist."

Magwenya said Israel needed to ensure that it adhered to the amended measures to help prevent more deaths in Gaza.
