JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Higher Education has ordered newly deregistered private colleges to reimburse students who are left in the lurch following a clampdown by the government.
Damelin and CityVarsity are among four institutions that have been unlisted as tertiary institutions owing to failure to submit their audited financial statements.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday, Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande said the private colleges would be given time to phase out students.
Damelin, CityVarsity, ICESA City Campus and Lyceum College have been ordered to halt teaching and learning until they get their ducks in a row.
Non-payment of staff salaries, exploitation of poor students, as well as corruption and bribery are among the many reasons the institutions have been rendered dysfunctional.
Nzimande said it was concerning that these private colleges had little care for providing quality education.
“These institutions in themselves owe the country the truth on the state of their situation.”
Nzimande said his department would assist in placing stranded students at other higher education institutions.
