CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Department of Mobility says it is ready to clamp down on those who will be breaking the rules of the road during the Easter holiday period.

The message came after the department launched its Easter road safety campaign in Cape Town at the Brackenfell Traffic College on Saturday.

According to the department, their road safety initiatives would rely heavily on the use of roadblocks, driver fitness tests, and vehicle checks for roadworthy compliance.

They said their Easter plans were based on what they experienced during previous holiday periods, a time of year that sees multiple car crashes that have taken the lives of passengers and other road users.

The provincial MEC for the department, Ricardo Mackenzie, added that road safety was a collective effort.

"We need a collective effort to reduce the number of people losing their life on our roads, not just enforcement agencies and road safety practitioners, but from our society at large.

“Our officers work hard 24 hours a day, often sacrificing precious time with their families. This Easter, I urge everyone travelling to support us in the drive to reduce road fatalities in the Western Cape."
