DURBAN - The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has requested to meet with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to discuss how peace and stability can be achieved in the province.

There have been concerns of increasing political tension as the country heads to the polls soon.

The latest concerns were sparked by an incident where ANC provincial chairperson, Siboniso Duma, interrupted the Zulu traditional prime minister, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who is also an IFP member, while speaking at an event on Saturday.

For years, the ANC and IFP have been the two key players in KwaZulu-Natal politics.

However, the parties have failed to see eye to eye, something some fear could fuel political tensions.

Briefing the media in Durban following Saturday’s incident, KZN ANC secretary, Bheki Mtolo, said the parties needed to meet.

"The generations that came before us have shown us that it is only through talks, dialogue and negotiation that bring peace against all odds."

He said he hopes both parties will come to the table to resolve differences.

"We trust that the IFP will respond accordingly and welcome our invitation to talk to them and bring peace to the province of KwaZulu-Natal."

The Moerane Commission, which investigated political killings in KZN back in 2018, also recommended that political parties must meet and discuss differences.
