CAPE TOWN - An alleged gunman who turned State witness in a case against alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, has detailed how he shot and killed Nicolaas Heerschap, the father of a former Hawks officer.

Modack and 14 other co-accused are in the Western Cape High Court, where they face a slew of charges, including the assassination of anti-gang detective, Charl Kinnear, who was killed outside his Bishop Lavis home in September 2020.

The State witness, who cannot be named to protect his safety, detailed how he was recruited to murder Heerschap.

He told the court that one of Modack's co-accused told him if he murdered Heerschap, a "gang boss" would reward him with more jobs, money and bulletproof cars.

He said he then agreed to meet another accused in Woodstock, who further instructed him about the murder.

The State witness then told the court he was driven to Melkbosstrand with three other co-accused on 9 July 2019.

He told the court they arrived at the Heerschap residence and acting on instruction from one of the other accused, he then shot the pensioner twice in the head as he was reversing out of the driveway.

Investigators believe Heerschap's murder was a case of mistaken identity as the intended target was his police officer son, Nico.

The trial continues in court on Wednesday.
