JOHANNESBURG - GOOD party leader Patricia de Lille says the country can afford to implement a basic income grant by cutting down on corruption and implementing tax reforms.

On Saturday, the party unveiled its manifesto in Sandton, where de Lille promised a R999 basic income grant should her party be elected into power during the upcoming polls.

She said the current Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant which has recently been increased from R350 to R370 is not enough to cover basic necessities.

"The fact that the R350 is less than half of an adult's needs is a recipe for disaster. If the economy cannot provide for people's basic needs, this responsibility falls on the state to provide."

De Lille said the party conducted an affordability study to see if the money was enough to help residents start a small business.

"The R1,000 enabled them to purchase their initial stock, which they can then then sell at a profit to buy more stock as well as afford their living expenses."
